Laguna Beach plans for July 4 without fireworks

By CLAUDIA KOERNER

LAGUNA BEACH — The city issued a reminder Friday that there will be no Fourth of July fireworks this year.

The decision to cut the annual display came last summer when the city made its budget, which the City Council approved on June 16. The budget cut about $873,000 from the general fund in response to the recession.

Last year, Independence Day fireworks cost the city about $22,000. This year, the fireworks contractor estimated a $50,000 show that would set fireworks off from a barge. Though some donations have come in, there is still not enough money to order the show. If there were enough money, the city would need to schedule the display by March 1.
